Shortly after, the Kellogg Foundation -- a longtime supporter of community foundation development in Michigan -- issued a generous challenge grant.

For every local dollar the Charlevoix County Community Foundation raised, the Kellogg Foundation offered to match it, dollar for dollar, up to $1 million.

Area donors responded enthusiastically. As a result, the Kellogg Foundation challenge was met, helping us establish a unique, million-dollar endowment dedicated exclusively to benefit young people.
By 1993, the community foundation began making its first grants to support education, the arts and culture, environmental initiatives, civic improvement projects, human service programs, recreation, and more.

Today, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation has grown to become a well-established, highly respected, and widely valued charitable resource. Net assets now total more than $20.2 million, and grants and scholarships of $11.4 million have been distributed over the years.

Our foundation's growth is all the more remarkable when one considers that Charlevoix County numbers fewer than 27,000 fulltime residents. Yet our success speaks volumes about our community's values, and the GENEROUS PEOPLE who live and vacation here.
