Bay Township - The Young Boy and the Stream

The third sculpture to complete a trifecta of Ernest Hemingway tributes in the region, The Young Boy and the Stream complements the statue of a young man leaving to begin his writing career (Petoskey), and the image of Hemingway which stands in Walloon Lake as a man at the end of his life and career. The Young Boy and the Stream also serves as a reminder of the basis for Hemingway’s attraction to the area – the fishing and extensive bounty of natural resources. He was known to have frequently fished in Horton Creek which travels past Bay Township Hall and drains to Horton Bay in Lake Charlevoix.

The late Martha Sulfridge, a nationally recognized sculptor with deep ties to Horton Bay, died shortly after finishing the prototype. Her family and community fulfilled her dream last summer to see its completion as a full-scale work, permanently installed in Horton Bay. The convenient location along the bike trail between Boyne City and Charlevoix, as well as the proximity to the township hall parking lot, the Horton Bay General Store, and the Red Fox, make this a great stopping point for historical reflection and appreciation.
