Beaver Island District Library Programs

Beaver Island District Library welcomed 5 Indigenous Grandmothers from around the world, all of whom were healers from a variety of cultures. They performed traditional rites and explained their cultures to a large group of community members and visitors. One of the women was a seed keeper who shared instructions on seed keeping traditions. Another program included school groups making crafts like pouches and dreamcatchers with Sally Rook. She explained the cultural significance of the craft as she instructed students in beadwork. JoAnne Cook, an indigenous storyteller and a Tribal Judge, presented the third program, where she shared stories important to the Anishinaabe people and talked about her role as a tribal judge with high school students and community members. All three programs were well-attended and enjoyed.
