Health Department of Northwest Michigan- Senior Smiles Program

A recent C3F Community Priorities grant helped the Health Department of Northwest Michigan to continue offering the Senior Smiles program in Charlevoix County. Setting up at four congregate meal sites throughout the year, the program provided dental hygiene education and items, plus free head, neck & oral cancer screenings for seniors. They also surveyed seniors’ overall dental health status. More than 78 seniors received clinical exams and over 200 completed the surveys. This work facilitated early detection and timely referrals for dental and related health concerns, while educating seniors about the impact of hidden sugars on oral health and overall well-being. The on-site, personalized approach resonated with participants, who valued access to professional assessment and guidance in a familiar congregate setting.
