Tara's meadow “Braiding Irish and Native American Cultures”

Recently, Tara's Meadow hosted a series of programs to honor and celebrate the Beaver Island’s Native American and Irish roots, resulting in a weekend of “Braiding Irish and Native American Cultures” during the annual Sustainability Fair. With the help of a C3F Arts & Culture Grant, they hosted internationally known Grammy nominated recording artist, speaker, author and activist “John Two-Hawks” alongside local Anishinaabe Wisdom Keeper Grandmother Gennie Morgan; and Michigan’s own Irish and Native American Instrumentalist musician Linda Hammond. Beginning with an Anishinaabe Water Blessing ceremony and an Irish Peace Blessing on Friday morning at the shore of the sacred Michigami (Lake Michigan), the weekend continued with special programming including a meet and greet with John Two-Hawks as well as a concert that evening where John shared his musical talents alongside his storytelling talents with an engaged audience. Linda Hammond and the Island’s Irish Step Dancers joined in for a part of the concert as well. Other weekend events included a retreat at Tara’s Meadow and a solstice celebration honoring Native Indigenous and Irish generations of the Island.
