Dave and Ruth Skop

“I really love the four seasons. We love to be outdoors in every one of them,” shares Dave Skop.  They are especially active in winter – skiing or hiking trails with their black Lab, Jack. “That’s due in part to running retail businesses,” explains Ruth. “There’s not a lot of time for recreation in the summer!”

Dave and Ruth have deep roots in the area. Dave is originally from Boyne Falls and Ruth grew up in East Jordan. They have owned several businesses over the years, including Ben Franklin Crafts, Wood & Wicker, Scrapper’s Attic, and Mitchell Street Frameworks. In 2008, Ruth became an Edward Jones financial advisor and Dave currently runs Mitchell Street Frameworks among other endeavors.

“We both come from hardworking families and have been fortunate in our success. We know it doesn’t always work out well for everyone and we feel grateful for our outcome,” said Ruth. “We work hard and enjoy the simple things in life: time with our family and friends; good food; a comfortable home; and travel to explore the world around us.”  With that in mind, they have provided for local organizations in their estate plan through the Charlevoix County Community Foundation. “I learned about giving through the Community Foundation while serving on an advisory committee. We decided to include organizations that are near to our hearts and that we already give to,” said Ruth.

“We don’t need to keep it all for ourselves,” noted Dave. “We have enough for ourselves and can be generous with our community and hope others will be encouraged to consider how they might be able to make a difference,” adds Ruth. In more ways than one, these two are making a difference close to home.
